Mulch like an arborist
  • Trees want 2–4 inches of mulch — more suffocates roots. Going deeper than 4" is for paths, not plantings.
  • Keep mulch 3–6 inches OFF the trunk flare. A mulch volcano rots the bark and invites girdling roots.
  • Bulk beats bags above ~1 yd³ — one yard is roughly 14 two-cubic-foot bags.

Supplier densities vary with moisture — the tonnage is a hauling estimate, not a scale ticket.
